Recognising wear

Can you here a rattling or scrapping noise from your travel drive? Is your travel drive leaking oil or has it stopped working completely? The probabilities are then high that the travel drive is damaged or worn. You can read more about recognising wear in our blog or watch our video.

If you do hear the hydraulic motor turn, but your sprocket does not turn any more, the motor shaft is probably worn. You can see that the teeth are worn at the connection with the motor shaft and sun gear when you disassemble the final drive. You can test the wear by putting back the sun gear in the engine shaft and turning it. If the sun gear rotates in the engine shaft while the engine shaft does not run, the engine shaft is worn.

Since the sun gear and motor shafts are interconnected, there is a chance that they may also become worn at the same time. Are you wondering whether you should be replacing both parts? See here what a worn motor shaft and sun gear look like or contact us.

There is a strong probability that your sun gear is worn when you do hear the hydraulic motor turn, but your sprocket no longer turns with it. When you disassemble the travel drive and remove the sun gear from the engine shaft, you can see this. If the teeth of the sun gear are still fine, the engine shaft will also turn. If this is not the case, the sun gear is worn.

Since the sun gear and engine shafts are interconnected, there is a chance that they will also become worn at the same time. See here a photo of a worn sun gear and engine shaft. Are you wondering whether you should be replacing both parts? See here what a worn sun gear and engine shaft look like or contact us.

Your lifetime seal is probably worn if your final drive leaks oil between the engine and reduction side. When you disassemble the final drive, you can see the wear from the thickness of both rings. Both rings become worn because the engine runs. In due course, the seals become too thin and they need replacing.

Another reason for lifetime seal wear can be the final drive not being use long term. Rust can then appear on the ground surfaces.

General questions about final drives

A drive motor should be replaced when:

  • Oil leakage occurs due to damaged seals, which can cause internal damage.
  • Metal particles are visible in the oil, indicating internal wear.
  • The excavator shows excessive vibrations, which may indicate worn parts.
  • Noise increases while final drive performance decreases.

It is recommended to disassemble your old final drive before placing an order in our online shop, as it will allow you to check the dimensions of the final drive.

  • Perform a visual inspection to check for loose parts, leaks or wear.
  • Check the oil level and quality, top up or replace.
  • Try to determine exactly where the noise is coming from. If necessary, use a stethoscope to locate and identify the sound.
  • Call in an expert if you cannot find or fix the cause of the problem.
  • Abrasive noise: This may indicate wear of the bearings or poor lubrication. Check the lubrication level
  • Clattering or rattling noise: This may be due to loose parts in the travel drives. Check bolts and fasteners.
  • Whooping or whistling noise: This may indicate worn or damaged sprockets that may need to be replaced.

A final drive or travel drive is an essential part of the powertrain in vehicles, especially heavy machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, and agricultural vehicles. It converts the rotational motion of the drive shaft or hydraulic motor into a powerful rotational movement for vehicle propulsion. A final drive usually consists of a differential, a set of gears for torque multiplication and speed reduction, and a final gear. Together, these components ensure the right balance between speed and tractive effort. Regular maintenance is essential to keep the travel drive functioning properly.

If you use your machine frequently, your final drive will eventually start to wear out. You will then need to replace it. At Fargo Drives, you can find alternative travel drives for your machine. They are of excellent quality, fit your machine securely and are a lot cheaper than original final drives. Find the right final drive / travel drive here.

Oil in your final drive

The correct oil for your final drive is listed in your excavator's manual. You can also check our blog where we give recommendations for mineral transmission oil.

The oil in your drive final drives should be changed every 250 working hours. This prevents damage and extends the life of your final drives.

  • Companies: Have the old oil collected by a waste disposal company.
  • Private individuals: Take the oil in small quantities to the waste disposal site.
