In combination with the engine shaft, a sun gear is in charge of the transmission of the hydraulic motor to the reduction side. Sun gears and engine shafts are interconnected through a gear connection. When the teeth are worn, they run over each other and only the hydraulic motor will be running.
If your machine stops working, your final drive may be broken. It is, however, not always necessary to replace your final drive completely. Sometimes it is sufficient to replace a part of the final drive such as the sun gear.
If you do hear the hydraulic motor turn, but your sprocket does not turn any more, your sun gear is probably worn. You can see this immediately when you disassemble the travel drive and remove the sun gear from the engine shaft. The teeth will be worn at this connection. You can test the wear by putting back the sun gear in the engine shaft and turning it. If the teeth are still fine, the engine shaft will also turn. If it turns in the engine shaft, the sun gear is worn.
