The lifetime seal in your final drive ensures that the hydraulic side of the reduction side is sealed. This is a seal made of two steel rings with planed sides that rotate over each other. Since it is planed, lapped on each other and an oil film is created in-between, it seals the final drive. This ensures the oil remains within the final drive, but that it can rotate.
Your machine may shut down if your final drive is worn. However, it is not always necessary to replace the entire final drive. It can be the case that only a part of your final drive needs to be replaced such as the lifetime seal (also referred to as a mechanical face seal, heavy duty seal, face seal, lifetime seal, floating seal, duo cone seal or toric seal).
Does your final drive leak oil in-between the engine side and reduction side? If this is the case, the lifetime seal is probably worn. Despite its name, these seals will not always last a lifetime. When you disassemble the final drive, you can see the wear from the thickness of both rings. Both rings become worn because the engine runs. In due course, the seals become too thin and they need replacing. Another reason why they wear can be that the final drive has not been operational for a time. Rust can then appear on the ground surfaces.
