FAI or Fabbrica Attrezzature Industriali was founded in 1963 by Giovanni Bettanin in Noventa Vicentina, Italy. Thanks to his father, Giovanni already had some experience with Ford agricultural tractors and different brands of earthmoving machines.
The first models produced by FAI were loaders based on a Ford chassis and an optional rear excavator. FAI was the first company to produce four-wheel drive excavators built on the same chassis.
In 1988, the company began building Komatsu mini excavators under licence. As of September 1989, Komatsu became a minor shareholder in FAI and FAI began producing mini excavators directly for Komatsu. In September 1995, the company was fully acquired by Komatsu and renamed FKI FAI Komatsu SpA. The machines were sold as FAI Komatsu until 1997 and were painted Komatsu yellow. After that, they dropped the name FAI and everything became Komatsu.
