For which machine
do you want a final drive?

Explanation

What type of oil should I use for my final drive?

In order to avoid damage to your hydraulic final drive (also known as travel drive), you should ensure to use the right type of oil in your final drive. The most frequently asked questions is therefore: What type of oil should I use for the travel drive of my machine (e.g. excavator)?

final drive oil

A final drive contains two different types op lubricants. First of all, hydraulic fluid is required in to drive the engine. The circulation of this oil through the engine ensures that the engine rotates. The supply of new oil also takes care of the lubrication and cooling of the engine.

Secondly, you have transmission fluid in the reduction. This lubricates the gears and bearings.

In Fargo Drives' final drives, a mineral transmission oil with a viscosity of SAE 80W/90 with a GL5 grade goes into the reduction part. This one is recommended by the manufacturer. This is based on normal use, when operating under extreme conditions (in terms of heavy load, long cycle times or ambient temperature) a mineral SAE85W/140 is often used.

In the Fargo Drives video below, we show you how to change the oil in your final drive. We also tell you which oil is best to use and how to check your oil level.

Checking the fluid in your final drive

The final drives in the Fargo Drives range are supplied filled with oil. However, it is always advisable to check the liquid level to make sure the oil is there and in sufficient quantity. Check this as follows:

  • Make sure the final drive is in horizontal position.
  • Turn the reduction so that the filler plug is at the top centre as shown below.
  • Unscrew the caps from the level plug and the filler plug.
  • If oil comes out of the level plug then you know it is at the correct level. If nothing comes out, add oil through the filler plug until it comes out of the level plug.

Changing the oil in your final drive

Change your drive oil every 250 hours, this will extend the life of your final drive. Change it as follows:

  • Make sure the final drive is in horizontal position.
  • Turn the reduction so that the filler plug is at the top centre as shown below.
  • Unscrew the filler plug, level plug and leak plug.
  • Drain the final drive completely.
  • Close the leak plug.
  • Top up the oil through the filler plug until it seeps from the level plug. Then close all caps.

Collection and disposal

When changing oil, make sure you collect the old oil neatly and dispose of it. Private individuals may take small quantities of old oil to a recycling park or the municipal waste disposal site.
